On September 12th, I spent the day on the big and beautiful Ohio State University campus for the annual Articulation Meeting for the Ohio Association of College Admission Counselors (OACAC). A highlight was the session on Ohio’s public 4-year institutions, where there is always something new!

ACT and SAT

When it comes to college entrance exams, Miami University surprised many when they announced they are dropping the requirement for the ACT optional writing test. From an advising stance, I’m still going to continue to encourage students to take the writing portion of the test as many schools still require them. University of Cincinnati (UC) continues to require the test and uses it for English placement, not admissions. Kent State and Ohio State both are using for admission purposes.

Most of the time, students will send in only their single best ACT or SAT score as all schools accept both. There are a few Ohio public schools, however, that do Super Score. Super Score is where a college (not ACT or SAT) will accept multiple score reports then take the highest subscore from each report to create a new, and your very best, test score. Cincinnati and Central State Super Score both the ACT and SAT, while Miami and Ohio University (OU) do so only with the SAT. Some private colleges as well as out of state schools do so also, just ask your admissions contact. Keep in mind, it doesn’t always make sense to Super Score, so if you’re stumped on what to do, contact LEAP and we will help you decide.

When it comes to sending those scores, UC, OSU and Miami require your scores come directly from the testing agency. If you didn’t send them at the time of testing, it’s about $10 per score report to do so after the fact.

My Favorite Changes

Ohio State no longer has minimum class rank and ACT scores for admission to their Honors and Scholars programs. Instead, once your regular application has been submitted, you apply for the program. Looks like they are taking a more holistic approach to evaluating students for the program which I think is a move in the right direction. In a similar move in the right direction, in my humble opinion, Miami will begin direct admission to the Farmer School of Business – just check the box on your app!

Don’t forget for those of you starting in fall 2012, the conversion to semesters will be complete for UC, Ohio State and OU. Because of the transition, OSU will not allow freshman to begin summer term in 2012.

Going Green

A number of schools are going green and requiring online applications, no longer accepting hard copies. Among these schools are Cincinnati, OSU, and Kent. At the same time, OSU is building a geothermal system to heat and cool the dorms next year.

What do you think of the changes?
